Boswellia in Canine Joint Supplements: Maintenance and Repair of the Barrier to Disease
Boswellia Serrata… the best kept open secret for the last 3000 years.
In the next 10 years virtually, all nutritional supplements will discover boswellia and will add them to some degree into their formula.
Boswellia is also in a lot of existing nutritional joint supplements, however, it’s usually in an inexpensive form that is relatively non-bioavailable, and not effective.
The more expensive Boswellia serrata extracts are the ones that are highly bioavailable and highly effective in maintenance and repair of the epithelial cells that block the external environment from our internal physiology.
A barrier to disease
Boswellia basically aids in the repair of the continual insult that occurs to the membranes of the epithelial cells. They induce the cell membrane to consistently and effectively engage mechanisms to repair small holes and defects in the integrity of that barrier.
The epithelial cells cover our bodies, and line the insides of our lung field and digestive system effectively separating us from toxins, chemicals, antigens, and infectious agents that are present in our environment.
The integrity of this barrier is of utmost importance.
There are hundreds of things that actively seek to break down the integrity of that barrier and allow unfettered egress into our bloodstream; chemicals, toxins, infectious agents and other bad things that will induce disease.
The reason that we use boswellia acids in our joint supplement is that it seals the gut and the respiratory system, and invariably continually repairs those cells and maintains their integrity at a high level.
It not only does this effectively but it’s also tropic (is actively moved to the cells) and chemo-tactic (chemically and actively drawn to a specific site) to the epithelial cells of the body.
Boswellia actively seeks out, locates and helps to repair the body’s epithelial cells.
Given this simple truth, we would expect for boswellia to help us not only with respiratory problems such as bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, and others, but also for gastrointestinal problems such as chronic inflammatory bowel disease, malabsorption syndromes, dietary allergy, and other intestinal maladies.
In fact, the body is leaking antigens such as Lectins, directly into the bloodstream through damage to the epithelial tissue. These unrestricted and undigested antigens become “non-self” to the body and the body reacts against them in an antigen-antibody cascade.
These antigens take up residence in the joints and actively tear apart the joint tissue. Thereafter, the synovial barrier then leaks antigens into the joint and produces the antigen-antibody reaction in the joint. This results in immune-mediated polyarthritis, joint pain, inflammation, and degenerative joint disease.
The Joints Most Affected
The joints that we continually worry about in the canine are the hips, knees, shoulders, and elbows. However, the most commonly affected joints are the joints of the spinal vertebra.
Osteo-arthritic conditions and degenerative joint disease in the spinal joints are ultimately more damaging, and produce a low-grade inflammation that continually compromises the nerves that exit these areas, thereby compromising the lifespan of the intestinal organs, and thus the overall lifespan of the animal.
Joint Supplement Therapy
What we recommend is to minimize that continual joint injury and the inflammation associated around the spinal joints by removing the continual inflammation that occurs in the joint. This should, in turn, serve to stabilize the membranes in the gut and actively work to prevent these harmful antigens from getting into the system in the first place. That in turn will work towards stabilizing the synovial cells of the joint, allowing the other beneficial (reparative) active ingredients (Green Lip Mussel, Boswellia, Grape Seed Extract and Hyaluronic Acid) access to the joint in order to promote long term support and repair to the joints.
